about

"Moog-Tastic!" by Dana Countryman features all original tunes, “Moog-ed” up and ready to roll, along with one tune by a certain Mr. Ludwig von Beethoven.

The completely instrumental album features guest stars Fay Lovsky, Vinnie Bell, Skip Heller, Morgan Fisher (of Mott the Hoople fame), along with Three-Time World Champion whistler Geert Chatrou, and electronic pop music pioneer Jean-Jacques Perrey—to name a few of the more famous musicians who contributed to the project.

This is the only solo MOOG album by musician and arranger Dana Countryman. Countryman’s two other previous electronic music albums were written and recorded with electronic music pioneer, Jean-Jacques Perrey. The two musicians toured all over Europe and the USA, giving concerts between 2006-2008. One of the duo’s tunes was featured on Comedy Central’s “South Park”, and a YouTube clip of it has generated tens of thousands of hits. Sadly, Mssr. Perrey passed away in 2016.

“It was a great honor for me to record and perform along side of the master: Monsieur Jean-Jacques Perrey. I’ll never forget the audiences we had! Also, JJ taught me so many of his special techniques. He really took me under his wing and made me his protégé. I always called him my “musical Godfather!”, Countryman says. "I miss him very much."

"Some of this album was inspired by Jean-Jacques, style-wise. Other tunes are completely different and in my own style—I wouldn’t just want to have just copied JJ!”

Retro styles on the album include rock, ragtime, classical, science fiction, vaudeville, French cabaret and goofy Space-Age Bachelor Pop—done up in a retro “Moog”-style!

Besides Countryman’s originals, the tour de force on this collection is probably Countryman’s 7 & ½ minute arrangement of Beethoven’s “Piano Sonata No. 14”, otherwise known here as “Storm Over Beethoven”. The song took over two years to record, and is made up of 48 separate tracks.

“It is probably the most ANGRY piece of music I’ve ever heard! I couldn’t wait to unleash my big modular synthesizer on it, and it also features my rock drummer Rick Bowen. It’s now a rocked-out duet for synth and drums!”, he says. “I really think Beethoven would’ve liked this arrangement."

The original CD release of this album contained two additional non-original songs: "Daytripper" and "La Califfe" Both of those songs can be found on YouTube.

The final tune that Countryman wrote and recorded with Perrey: "Frantic Ringer" is included here for the first time, and has not previously been released in any form.

about

Dana Countryman Seattle, Washington

This artist remains a mystery. He never performs live in concert, these days. Deeply allergic to hip-hop and most modern radio sounds, he stays happy in his retro pop world.
